至少 至少 give you something to think about

  • On July 27, 2008, the renowned Malaysian musician Master Chen Huey Chong passed away at the age of sixty-one. Master Chen has neither power nor wealth but his death stirred both the Singapore and Malaysia media scenes.
  • “That night, Johor Bahru wept,” news commentator Lin Ming Hua said, “we wept, as the city lost her marvelous son, the nation lost an art maestro, and the community lost a cultural cultivator.”
  • Nationwide, Guang Ming Daily made an appeal for “recognition for cultural worker” on July 31. Sin Chew Daily advocated that “there should not be any ethnic barrier in cultural and arts scene”.
  • Beyond the national border, Singapore Lianhe Zaobao quoted journalist Du Nan Fa saying “Master Chen’s voice has been a significant voice”. Taiwan Sinorama Magazine contained a 6-page coverage on Master Chen titled “A Silent Musician – The Father of Malaysian Music, Master Chen Huey Chong”.
  • In Master Chen’s mourning hall, arts lovers and educators gathered from all over the world. His disciples sang, played their instruments, and beat their drums in tears. Putting aside his heavy duty, Malaysia Minister of Culture, Arts, and Heritage also presented the certificate of accolade for Master Chen personally. In deep sadness and grief, all of us came to realize that this ordinary man has indeed been a great cultural worker and an admirable arts master.
  • Master Chen dedicated his music and voice to this land since his graduation from Taiwan Normal University in 1970s. He joined Foon Yew High School and developed Foon Yew as an incubator for artistic talents. Then, Master Chen spread the seeds of music in Johor Bahru, in Southern Malaysia, before finally, all over the nation. His music and charisma inspired and touched his friends, his disciples and the cultural arts scene as a whole.
  • Yet, his lifelong call to build a music hall for the fast-paced city, Johor Bahru, has never come true. Sometime, the lonely Master Chen would express his disappointment and resentment with his pen. His criticism was uncomfortably razor-sharp to the ears of the Malaysian Chinese community. Reading his criticism was like sitting on a bed of thorns. But for Master Chen, his words and musical notes were the same--- they arose from the bottom of his heart. Listening to his words, we seemed to hear an artistic soul heaving a deep sigh for an unhealed cultural wound.
  • Over three decades of musical education, Master Chen led his followers just like what Moses in Exodus did. Despite the awfully limited resources he had, he held concert after concert without ever earning a decent living out of it. When Master Chen lied on his sick bed, music is his best healing treatment.
  • Master Chen once said, “We need a hero for the culture of Malaysian Chinese while he is only an unworthy warrior.”
  • However, when our cultural cultivators embarked on their own journeys, most of them remained the lone paddler of the small canoe in the cultural river. When the sun of culture fell in the dusk, the shadow of Master Chen got longer and longer, before it rose as high as a gigantic flag flying in the evening wind that provided us with a direction for the future.
  • At the end of Master Chen’s journey, he was remembered as a composer, a music educator, a choir conductor, a cultural cultivator, the father of 24 season drum, the father of Malaysian music, 南方人文精神奖得主, and 国家文化人物. He is an everlasting and dignified model in Malaysian arts scene.
  • Master Chen knew the way to carry classics and traditions into the artistic future in an innovative manner. His ceaseless pursue of his ideal world of arts and culture lies in tomorrow. When Singaporean arts master Chen Rui Xian looked at Master Chen’s vigorous works and reflected on his fruitful life. Chen urged us not to weep anymore but carry on Master Chen’s journey for him from the point he stopped.
  • 《牧歌的人》— Concert for Master Chen Huey Chon, organized by新山歌乐协会与南方学院 is not a send-off concert. Instead, we are walking towards Master Chen’s direction, with the drums companionship, with music leadership, towards “九歌年代”
  • The master had left. But his style and spirit live eternally. Now is the right moment for us to begin. The plan named as “南马乐苑”will bring together resources and efforts from all directions. Step by step, the music hall will one day be built in this southern city.
  • The way to commemorate an artist is moving forward.
